My Light

My Light is a song about self-discovery and belonging. It brings to life an excerpt from Sharlene Petigara’s poem “when you close your eyes,” in which uses light as a metaphor for finding our true selves, moving toward our own “source of light”. Tracing this journey, the music gradually builds from a shimmering, sustained opening into a full and radiant conclusion. The music also includes moments of aleatory, including overtone singing, as well as layered textures and echoes of musical ideas that emerge and transform throughout the piece.
This work was commissioned by the Vancouver Youth Choir (Carrie Tennant, Artistic Director) and premiered in March 10, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
