Shadow/Light
Shadow/Light is a set of three works for soprano (live performer + two prerecorded voices), and live-processed electronics that explore the contrast and connection between light and dark. It was commissioned by soprano Dory Hayley to be featured alongside Morton Feldman's renowned composition Three Voices on her double album "I Love Evil", set to be released in 2024.
This work was named a 2021 SOCAN Young Composers Competition award winner (1st prize in the choral/vocal category). Composer's note
"Each movement of 'Shadow/Light' is based on a poem written by me in the spring, summer, and fall of 2020 and presented chronologically. These texts serve as short 'time capsules' created as part of my own emotional journey and struggles with mental health during COVID-19 pandemic lock-downs. However, I should note that although these texts and their subsequent musical settings were born during this strange time in the world, this work is not tied to this moment in time. Rather, 'Shadow/Light' is about the human experience of processing grief, loss, anxiety, and apathy, as well as searching for hope — similar in that way to the very work which this composition pays homage." — K.
